Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio. This is like a MPG rating on a car. The higher the number the more energy efficient. New units have ratings from 10 to 17 SEER, older units had ratings as low as 6 SEER. What is an AFUE? Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency. The higher the number the more efficient it is. New units have ratings from 78% to 96%. Older units have ratings of 55 - 60%. What is HSPF? Heating Seasonal Performance Factor The higher the number, the more efficient. New units have ratings from 7.0 to 9.4. Which is best, Heat Pump or Natural Gas Heat? That depends on many things.
